بَابٌ فِي الصَّلَاةِ الْوُسْطَى .

عَنِ الزِّبْرِقَانِ قَالَ : إِنَّ رَهْطًا مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ مَرَّ بِهِمْ زَيْدُ بْنُ ثَابِتٍ وَهُمْ مُجْتَمِعُونَ ، فَأَرْسَلُوا إِلَيْهِ غُلَامَيْنِ لَهُمْ يَسْأَلُونَهُ عَنِ الصَّلَاةِ الْوُسْطَى ، فَقَالَ : هِيَ صَلَاةُ الْعَصْرِ ، فَقَامَ إِلَيْهِ رَجُلَانِ مِنْهُمْ فَسَأَلَاهُ ، فَقَالَ : هِيَ الظُّهْرُ ، ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَا إِلَى أُسَامَةَ بْنِ زَيْدٍ فَسَأَلَاهُ فَقَالَ : هِيَ الظُّهْرُ ، إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - كَانَ يُصَلِّي الظُّهْرَ بِالْهَجِيرِ ، وَلَا يَكُونُ وَرَاءَهُ إِلَّا الصَّفُّ وَالصَّفَّانِ ، وَالنَّاسُ فِي قَائِلَتِهِمْ وَفِي تِجَارَتِهِمْ ، فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ - عَزَّ وَجَلَّ - ( حَافِظُوا عَلَى الصَّلَوَاتِ وَالصَّلَاةِ الْوُسْطَى وَقُومُوا لِلَّهِ قَانِتِينَ ) فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ .
رَوَاهُ النَّسَائِيُّ وَقَالَ الشَّيْخُ فِي الْأَطْرَافِ : لَيْسَ فِي السَّمَاعِ ، وَلَمْ يَذْكُرْهُ أَبُو الْقَاسِمِ .
رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ ، وَرِجَالُهُ مُوَثَّقُونَ ، إِلَّا أَنَّ الزِّبْرِقَانَ لَمْ يَسْمَعْ مِنْ أُسَامَةَ بْنِ زَيْدٍ وَلَا مِنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ . وَاللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ .
رَوَاهُ النَّسَائِيُّ وَقَالَ الشَّيْخُ فِي الْأَطْرَافِ : لَيْسَ فِي السَّمَاعِ ، وَلَمْ يَذْكُرْهُ أَبُو الْقَاسِمِ .
رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ ، وَرِجَالُهُ مُوَثَّقُونَ ، إِلَّا أَنَّ الزِّبْرِقَانَ لَمْ يَسْمَعْ مِنْ أُسَامَةَ بْنِ زَيْدٍ وَلَا مِنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ ثَابِتٍ . وَاللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ .
Al-Zibriqan narrates: Some men of Quraysh were present, and Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by them while they were gathered together. They sent two of their servants to Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) to ask him what is meant by the middle prayer. Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: It is the Asr prayer. Then two men from among them got up, went to him and asked him about it, and he said: It is the Zuhr prayer. Then those two went to Usamah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) and asked him about it, and he too said: What is meant is the Zuhr prayer. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to offer the Zuhr prayer in the midday heat, and behind him there would be only one row or two rows, while the rest of the people at that time would be either taking their midday rest or busy in their trade. So Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "Guard the prayers, and the middle prayer, and stand before Allah Almighty in humble devotion." After this the narrator mentioned the whole hadith.
Al-Nasa'i recorded it. The Shaykh stated in "al-Atraf": It is not in the sama' (the heard transmission), nor did Abu al-Qasim mention it. Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators have been declared trustworthy, except that the narrator al-Zibriqan heard neither from Usamah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) nor from Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him). And Allah knows best.

وَعَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " أَفْضَلُ الصَّلَاةِ صَلَاةُ الْمَغْرِبِ ، وَمَنْ صَلَّى بَعْدَهَا رَكْعَتَيْنِ بَنَى اللَّهُ لَهُ بَيْتًا فِي الْجَنَّةِ " .
رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ فِي الْأَوْسَطِ ، وَفِيهِ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَحْيَى بْنِ عُرْوَةَ ، وَهُوَ ضَعِيفٌ .

Sayyidah Aishah Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The most excellent prayer is the Maghrib prayer. Whoever offers two rak'ahs after this prayer, Allah Almighty will build a house for him in Paradise."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains a narrator, Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Yahya bin Urwah, and he is da'if (weak).

وَعَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ : قَاتَلَ النَّبِيُّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - عَدُوًّا فَلَمْ يَفْرَغْ مِنْهُمْ حَتَّى أَخَّرَ الْعَصْرَ عَنْ وَقْتِهَا ، فَلَمَّا رَأَى ذَلِكَ قَالَ : " اللَّهُمَّ مَنْ حَبَسَنَا عَنِ الصَّلَاةِ الْوُسْطَى فَامْلَأْ بُيُوتَهُمْ نَارًا ، وَامْلَأْ قُبُورَهُمْ نَارًا " - أَوْ نَحْوَ ذَلِكَ .
رَوَاهُ أَحْمَدُ وُالطَّبَرَانِيُّ فِي الْكَبِيرِ وَالْأَوْسَطِ ، وَرِجَالُهُ مُوَثَّقُونَ .

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) fought an enemy, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) remained engaged in that battle until the time of the Asr prayer passed. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) saw this, he made this supplication: "O Allah, whoever kept us from offering the middle prayer, fill their houses with fire and fill their graves with fire" (the narrator says:) or he said some other words like that.
Ahmad recorded it, and al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and its narrators have been declared trustworthy.

وَلَهُ عِنْدُ الْبَزَّارِ : أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - قَالَ : " صَلَاةُ الْوُسْطَى صَلَاةُ الْعَصْرِ " .

Al-Bazzar recorded this report on his authority: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What is meant by the middle prayer is the Asr prayer."

Al-Tabarani recorded this report on his authority in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir: On the occasion of the Battle of the Confederates (al-Ahzab), the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forgot the Zuhr and Asr prayers, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) was reminded of them after Maghrib. After this the narrator mentioned the whole hadith.

وَعَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - يَوْمَ الْأَحْزَابِ : " شَغَلُونَا عَنِ الصَّلَاةِ الْوُسْطَى مَلَأَ اللَّهُ بُيُوتَهُمْ وَقُبُورَهُمْ نَارًا " .

Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that on the occasion of the Battle of the Confederates (al-Ahzab), the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "These people did not let us offer the middle prayer. May Allah Almighty fill their houses and their graves with fire."

وَعَنْ جَابِرٍ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - قَالَ يَوْمَ الْخَنْدَقِ : " مَلَأَ اللَّهُ بُيُوتَهُمْ وَقُبُورَهُمْ نَارًا كَمَا شَغَلُونَا عَنِ الصَّلَاةِ الْوُسْطَى حَتَّى غَابَتِ الشَّمْسُ " .
رَوَاهُ الْبَزَّارُ ، وَرِجَالُهُ رِجَالُ الصَّحِيحِ .

Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that on the day of the Battle of the Trench (al-Khandaq), the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "May Allah Almighty fill their houses and their graves with fire, because they kept us from the middle prayer until the sun set."

وَعَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ أَنَّهُ أَقْبَلَ حَتَّى نَزَلَ دِمَشْقَ ، فَنَزَلَ عَلَى أَبِي كُلْثُومٍ الدَّوْسِيِّ ، فَتَذَاكَرُوا الصَّلَاةَ الْوُسْطَى فَقَالَ : اخْتَلَفْنَا كَمَا اخْتَلَفْتُمْ وَنَحْنُ بِفِنَاءِ بَيْتِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - وَفِينَا الرَّجُلُ الصَّالِحُ أَبُو هَاشِمِ بْنُ عُتْبَةَ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ شَمْسٍ ، فَقَالَ : أَنَا أَعْلَمُ لَكُمْ ذَلِكَ ، فَأَتَى النَّبِيَّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - وَكَانَ جَرِيئًا عَلَيْهِ ، فَاسْتَأْذَنَ فَدَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ ثُمَّ خَرَجَ إِلَيْنَا ، فَأَخْبَرَنَا أَنَّهَا صَلَاةُ الْعَصْرِ .
رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ فِي الْكَبِيرِ ، وَالْبَزَّارُ وَقَالَ : لَا نَعْلَمُ رَوَى أَبُو هَاشِمِ بْنُ عُتْبَةَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - إِلَّا هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ وَحَدِيثًا آخَرَ . قُلْتُ : وَرِجَالُهُ مُوَثَّقُونَ .
رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ فِي الْكَبِيرِ ، وَالْبَزَّارُ وَقَالَ : لَا نَعْلَمُ رَوَى أَبُو هَاشِمِ بْنُ عُتْبَةَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - إِلَّا هَذَا الْحَدِيثَ وَحَدِيثًا آخَرَ . قُلْتُ : وَرِجَالُهُ مُوَثَّقُونَ .
It is reported about Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he came and stopped at Damascus, staying with Abu Kulthum al-Dawsi. Those present began discussing the middle prayer, and Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We too differed just as your opinions differ, while we were in the courtyard of the house of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Among us was a righteous man, Sayyiduna Abu Hashim bin Utbah bin Rabi'ah bin Abd Shams. He said: I will find out about this for you. Then he went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he used to speak to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) without formality. He asked permission to enter, went in to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), then came out and told us: What is meant by it is the Asr prayer.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and al-Bazzar recorded it; he says: Regarding any hadith that Sayyiduna Abu Hashim bin Utbah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), we know only of this hadith and one other hadith. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Its narrators have been declared trustworthy.

وَعَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَفْلَحَ أَنَّ نَفَرًا مِنَ الصَّحَابَةِ أَرْسَلُونِي إِلَى ابْنِ عُمَرَ يَسْأَلُونَهُ عَنِ الصَّلَاةِ الْوُسْطَى ، فَقَالَ : كُنَّا نَتَحَدَّثُ أَنَّهَا الصَّلَاةُ الَّتِي وُجِّهَ فِيهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - إِلَى الْقِبْلَةِ : الظُّهْرُ .
رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ فِي الْأَوْسَطِ ، وَرِجَالُهُ مُوَثَّقُونَ .

Abdul Rahman bin Aflah narrates: Some of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) to ask him about the middle prayer. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: We used to say among ourselves that what is meant by it is the prayer during which the face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was turned towards the Qiblah, and that is the Zuhr prayer.

وَعَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ قَالَتْ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " شَغَلُونَا عَنْ الصَّلَاةِ الْوُسْطَى صَلَاةِ الْعَصْرِ ، مَلَأَ اللَّهُ أَجْوَافَهُمْ وَقُلُوبَهُمْ نَارًا " .
رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ فِي الْكَبِيرِ ، وَفِيهِ مُسْلِمُ بْنُ الْمُلَائِيُّ الْأَعْوَرُ وَهُوَ ضَعِيفٌ .
قُلْتُ : وَيَأْتِي حَدِيثُ أَبِي مَالِكٍ فِي الصَّلَاةِ الْوُسْطَى فِي ( وَالسَّمَاءِ ذَاتِ الْبُرُوجِ ) - إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ .
رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ فِي الْكَبِيرِ ، وَفِيهِ مُسْلِمُ بْنُ الْمُلَائِيُّ الْأَعْوَرُ وَهُوَ ضَعِيفٌ .
قُلْتُ : وَيَأْتِي حَدِيثُ أَبِي مَالِكٍ فِي الصَّلَاةِ الْوُسْطَى فِي ( وَالسَّمَاءِ ذَاتِ الْبُرُوجِ ) - إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ .
Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "These people did not let us offer the middle prayer, that is, the Asr prayer. May Allah Almighty fill their bellies and their hearts with fire."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Its chain contains a narrator, Muslim bin al-Mula'i al-A'war, and he is da'if (weak). (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: The hadith narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) concerning the middle prayer will come in the chapter on Surah al-Buruj, if Allah wills.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Its chain contains a narrator, Muslim bin al-Mula'i al-A'war, and he is da'if (weak). (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: The hadith narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) concerning the middle prayer will come in the chapter on Surah al-Buruj, if Allah wills.
