Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 9940

Sayyiduna Jubayr bin Mut'im (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When Abu Jahl came back to Makkah after meeting Sayyiduna Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: "O company of Quraysh! (Sayyiduna) Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) has settled in Yathrib. He has sent out his scouts, and he wants to inflict harm on you. So beware of passing along his route, and do not even go near it, for he is like a ravenous lion. He is full of rage against you; you banished him the way ticks are cast off from camels' feet. By Allah, his (fervour or rage) is intense. Whenever I have seen him or any of his companions, I have seen devils with them. And you know the enmity of the two sons of Qaylah; so he is an enemy who seeks help from an enemy." Mut'im bin Adi said to him: "O Abu al-Hakam, by Allah, I have not seen anyone more truthful in speech and in keeping promises than your brother (that is, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)) whom you have driven away. What you have done, you have done, but now be cautious regarding him." Abu Sufyan bin al-Harith said: "However much you were opposing him, oppose him in the harshest way! For if the two sons of Qaylah prevail over you, they will respect neither any kinship nor any covenant with you. If you heed what I say, either let them share the fate of Kinanah, or drive (Sayyiduna) Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) out from among those people, and then he will be alone and solitary. As for the two sons of Qaylah, by Allah, they and the people of Dahlak are equal in abasement, and I will suffice you against their might." Then he recited these verses: "I will show a harsh side of myself to everyone, whether near or far; the men of the Khazrajite woman will be abased whenever there is jest after earnest." When this reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: "By the One in whose hand my soul is, I will certainly kill them, I will certainly crucify them, and I will certainly guide them while they are unwilling. I am a mercy; Allah Almighty has sent me, and He will not take me in death until Allah Almighty makes His religion prevail." After this, the narrator mentioned the complete hadith.
Al-Tabarani recorded it as "wijadah" (from a written record) from Ahmad bin Salih al-Misri, who says: I found in a document in Madinah that this is narrated from Abd al-Aziz bin Muhammad al-Darawardi. The narrators of this narration are thiqat (trustworthy).
