Sayyiduna Rabi'ah bin Abbad (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I was with my father; I was a young man. I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) going to various tribes. Behind him there used to be a man of reddish complexion with a handsome face, who wore his hair long. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would stop at a tribe and say: "O Banu so-and-so! I am the Messenger of Allah to you. I command you to worship Him and not to associate anything with Him, and to affirm me and protect me, so that I may carry out what Allah Almighty has sent me with." When he finished his talk, the man behind him would say: "O Banu so-and-so! This man wants you to abandon al-Lat and al-Uzza, and to abandon your tribe's allies from Banu Malik bin Uqaysh, and come to the innovation and misguidance that he has brought. So do not listen to him and do not follow him." (The narrator says:) I asked my father: "Who is this man?" He told me: "This is his uncle, Abu Lahab."
Abdullah bin Ahmad and al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains Husayn bin Abdullah bin Ubaydullah, who is da'if (weak); Yahya bin Ma'in declared him thiqah (trustworthy) according to one report. Various routes of this report have already passed in the chapter on the harm inflicted on the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and some of its chains are sahih (authentic).
