Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man from among the Muslims granted protection to a man, and the commander of the army was Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Do not grant him protection." Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "We will grant him protection. I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Any one of the Muslims may grant protection on behalf of the Muslims.'"
Imam Ahmad, Imam Abu Ya'la and Imam al-Bazzar recorded this narration. Its chain contains a narrator, al-Hajjaj bin Artah, and he is a mudallis (one who conceals defects in the chain).
