Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 9679

Abu Ishaq narrates: I asked Sayyiduna al-Bara' (may Allah be pleased with him): "A man charges at the idolaters; is he among those who throw themselves into destruction with their own hands?" He replied: "No, because when Allah Almighty sent Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), He said: 'So fight in the path of Allah; you are held responsible only for yourself.'" That (verse about destruction) relates to spending.
Imam Ahmad recorded this narration. Its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except Sulayman bin Dawud al-Hashimi, and he is thiqah (trustworthy).
