Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with zakah three times. He asked: "Whom do you count as a martyr?" The people said: "Whoever is killed in the path of Allah." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In that case the martyrs of my ummah would be few. Being killed in the path of Allah is martyrdom, dying of plague is martyrdom, a woman dying during childbirth is martyrdom, dying by burning is martyrdom, dying by drowning is martyrdom, dying of consumption is martyrdom, and dying of a disease of the belly is martyrdom."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains a narrator, Mandal bin Ali, who is da'if (weak), though he has been declared trustworthy.
Al-Bazzar recorded it.
