Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) reports this as a marfu' hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah Almighty will not combine the dust of the path of Allah and the smoke of Hell in the belly of a man. Whoever's feet become dusty in the path of Allah, Allah Almighty will make his whole body forbidden to Hell. Whoever fasts one day in the path of Allah, Allah Almighty will remove Hell from him by a distance of a thousand years, a distance covered by a swift rider. Whoever receives a wound in the path of Allah will be sealed with the seal of the martyrs, and that wound will be a light for him on the Day of Resurrection, its colour like the colour of saffron and its fragrance like the fragrance of musk, by which all the earlier and later people will recognise him, and they will say: So-and-so bears the seal of the martyrs. And whoever fights in the path of Allah for as long as the interval between two milkings of a she-camel, Paradise becomes obligatory for him."
Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy), except that Khalid bin Duraik did not hear from Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him), nor did he meet him.
