Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 9443

Ubaydullah bin Abdullah narrates about Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): A man came and asked: "Did you hear the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say anything about horses?" Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "Yes! I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Goodness is tied to the forelocks of horses until the Day of Resurrection. Buy on the account of Allah Almighty and borrow on the account of Allah Almighty.' It was said: 'O Messenger of Allah! How can we buy on the account of Allah Almighty and borrow on the account of Allah Almighty?' The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Say: We borrow on the condition that when we receive our share in the distribution of the spoils (we will repay), and we buy on the condition that when Allah Almighty grants us victory (we will pay). You will continue to be upon goodness as long as your jihad remains fresh and green. In the last times there will be people who will be in doubt about jihad; then strive in jihad in their time, and then take part in military expeditions, for in those days taking part in an expedition will be fresher and greener.'"
Abu Ya'la recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Baqiyyah, who is a mudallis (one who conceals defects in the chain). The rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
