Sayyiduna Fadalah bin Ubayd (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Islam has three levels: a lower one, an upper one, and an upper chamber. As for the lower one, it is Islam, which the generality of Muslims enter; whoever of them is asked will say: 'I am a Muslim.' As for the upper level, it refers to the varying excellence of their deeds; some Muslims are more excellent than others. As for the highest upper chamber, it is jihad in the way of Allah; only the most excellent of them attain it."
Al-Tabarani recorded it through the narration of Abu Abd al-Malik from al-Qasim; I do not know Abu Abd al-Malik, and the rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
