Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Once we were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when a man came whose face was extremely ugly, whose clothes were extremely bad, who was extremely foul-smelling, and who was walking with his arms spread out. He stepped over the necks of the people and came and sat in front of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He asked: "Who created you?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: "Allah Almighty." He asked: "Who created the sky?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: "Allah Almighty." He asked: "Who created the earth?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: "Allah Almighty." He asked: "Who created Allah Almighty?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said "Subhan Allah (Glory be to Allah)" twice and held his forehead (or perhaps he held that man's forehead). The man got up and left. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Bring that man to me!" The narrator says: We searched for him, but it was as if he had never existed. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That was Iblis, who came to make you doubt about your religion."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains a narrator, Abdullah bin Ja'far al-Madini, the father of Ali bin al-Madini, and people have accused him of fabricating hadith. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: (Other) hadiths (of this kind) will come in the chapter on Iblis and his armies.
