Zadhan Abu Umar reports from Ulaym: We were sitting on a rooftop, and one of the Companions was with us. The narrator says: I think he said that it was Sayyiduna Abs al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him). People were leaving during the plague. Sayyiduna Abs (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O plague! Take me in your grip!" He said this three times. Ulaym said to him: "Why are you saying this? Did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) not say: 'None of you should ever wish for death, for then his deeds will be cut off, and he will not be sent back so that he might strive further to gain (Allah Almighty's) pleasure'?" Sayyiduna Abs al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Hasten towards death before six things: the rule of fools, the selling of judicial rulings, taking blood (that is, killing) lightly, violating the rights of kinship, and the emergence of people who will make the Qur'an into songs (mazamir); they will put forward a man who will sing to them, even if he has less knowledge of the religion than they do.'"
Ahmad, al-Bazzar, and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat and al-Mu'jam al-Kabir recorded something similar, except that his wording is: Sayyiduna Abs al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "He (peace and blessings be upon him) expressed fear for his Ummah regarding six things: the rule of children, a great number of police, bribery in judicial rulings, violating the rights of kinship, taking killing lightly, and the emergence of people who will make the Qur'an into songs (mazamir); they will put forward to lead them a man who is neither the most knowledgeable of them nor the most virtuous, but he will sing (the Qur'an) to them." The chain of Ahmad contains a narrator, Uthman bin Umayr al-Bajali, who is da'if (weak); of the two chains of al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, the narrators of one are the narrators of the Sahih.
