Sa'id bin Amr bin Sa'id bin al-As narrates: Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) took from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) the water vessel which he used to carry while accompanying the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) had fallen ill. Once, Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) was helping the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) perform ablution, and during the ablution the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his head and looked (at him) once or perhaps twice, and then said: "O Mu'awiyah, if you become a ruler, fear Allah and act justly." Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: After that I continually expected that, because of this statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I would be given authority, until I was given it.
Ahmad recorded it, and
it is mursal; its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
Abu Ya'la recorded it from Sa'id from Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) as a connected (mawsul) report; its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in abridged form from Abd al-Malik bin Umayr from Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him); its chain contains Isma'il bin Ibrahim bin Muhajir, who is da'if (weak), though he has been declared trustworthy.
