Qays bin Abi Hazim narrates: I was sitting with Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), who was the caliph of the Messenger of Allah; this was one month after the passing of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). After this the narrator mentioned the whole incident, in which it is stated that an announcement was made among the people: "The prayer is gathering!" This was the first prayer among the Muslims for which it was announced among the people that the prayer is gathering. The people gathered, and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) ascended the pulpit; it was something that had been made for him, on which he would stand and deliver sermons, and this was the first sermon in Islam. After praising and extolling Allah Almighty, he said: "O people, I wish that someone else had taken on this task instead of me. If you hold me to the Sunnah of your Prophet, I do not have the strength for it, for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was protected from the devil, and moreover revelation used to descend upon him (peace and blessings be upon him) from the heavens."
Ahmad recorded it; its chain contains Isa bin al-Musayyab al-Bajali, who is da'if (weak).
