Sayyiduna Ismah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man from the tribe of Khuza'ah came, and Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) met him. He asked: "What has brought you here?" He replied: "I have come to ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): when Allah Almighty takes you in death, to whom shall we pay the zakah of our wealth?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "To Abu Bakr." He asked: "When Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) passes away, then to whom?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "To Umar." He asked: "When Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) passes away, then to whom?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "To Uthman." He asked: "If Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) passes away, then to whom?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "See for yourselves."
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains al-Fadl bin al-Mukhtar, who is extremely da'if (weak).
