Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 8741

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) said: A man came from Bahrain to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not return his greeting. He had a gold ring on his hand and was wearing a silk cloak. The man went back distressed and complained about this to his wife. His wife said to him: "Perhaps the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) disliked your cloak and your ring; take them both off." He took them both off. The next day, when he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned his greeting. He said: "O Messenger of Allah, I came to you earlier and you turned away from me." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There was an ember of fire in your hand." He said: "In that case, I have brought many embers." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What you have brought is of no more worth to us than the stones of the rocky ground; it is the enjoyment of the life of this world." The man asked: "Then what should I wear as a ring?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "(Wear a ring with) a band of silver, iron or brass." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Al-Nasa'i (may Allah have mercy on him) recorded a small part from the beginning of this report.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. The narrator Abu al-Najib was declared thiqah (trustworthy) by Ibn Hibban, and the remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).
