It is narrated from Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qays (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: Arrogance was mentioned in the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he spoke severely about it and said: Indeed, Allah Almighty does not love any arrogant, boastful person. A man among those present said: "By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, I wash my clothes and their whiteness pleases me; the strap of my sandal pleases me; and the hanger ('alaqah, the part by which it is hung) of my stick pleases me." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That is not arrogance. Arrogance is that you turn away from the truth and look down on people."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and Imam al-Bazzar recorded a report like it. Its chain contains a narrator, Muhammad bin Abi Layla, who had a poor memory; his hadith is hasan (good) on the basis of the supporting reports that have already passed in this chapter. However, the narrator named Abd al-Rahman did not hear from Sayyiduna Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him). (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: this report also has a chain in the chapter on Surah al-Nisa'. This report has various chains that have already passed in Kitab al-Iman (the Book of Faith), and some of its chains are in Kitab al-Zuhd (the Book of Asceticism).
