Muhammad bin Abd al-Rahman bin As'ad bin Zurarah narrates: My uncle told me that Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) was afflicted with an ailment which the people of Madinah call dhabh. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I will surely do all I can to be excused regarding Abu Umamah (the narrator is unsure; perhaps the words are:) I will surely go to the full limit of excuse regarding him." The narrator says: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cauterized him with his own blessed hand, and he passed away. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "An evil death, for the Jews, who say: Why did this man not have the affliction removed from his companion? Yet I have no power over anything for him or for myself against Allah Almighty."
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
