Ali bin Abdullah al-Bariqi narrates: A woman in Makkah asked me for a ruling. I said to her: "Here is Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both); go to him and ask him for the ruling." The woman went towards him, and I followed her so that I could hear what she would say. The woman said: "Give me a ruling about cheese." Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "What is cheese?" She replied: "We make it from milk in such and such a way, and they curdle it with rennet." Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "What the Muslims and the People of the Book have made, eat it; and what they have not made, do not eat it." The woman said: "O Sayyiduna Abdullah! Give me a ruling about locusts." He said: "All of it is pure (i.e., it does not need to be slaughtered)." The woman said: "O Sayyiduna Abdullah! Give me a ruling about gold." Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "It is disliked for men." After that the narrator mentioned the rest of the hadith.
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except for al-Tabarani's teacher, who is thiqah (trustworthy).
