Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 7785

Alqamah narrates: A man came to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "I have given my wife as many divorces as the number of the stars." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The women of the people of —" after this the narrator mentioned a word which I do not remember. Another man came to him and said: "I have given my wife eight divorces." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Do people want her to become separated from you?" He replied: "Yes." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O people! Allah Almighty has made clear the ruling on divorce. So whoever divorces in the way Allah Almighty has set out has done a clear thing, and whoever creates confusion in it, we will hold him to his confusion. By Allah! It will not be that you create confusion regarding yourselves and we carry its burden for you." He meant that they would be counted just as you said. The narrator says: We think that the statement of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) — after this the narrator mentioned a word which I do not remember — (that statement is:) that if this man had all the women on the face of the earth and then had said these words, all those women would have been divorced.
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
