Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that he gave his wife one divorce during her menstruation; then he intended to give the remaining two divorces after it during the two remaining menstrual cycles (qur'). When this news reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: "O Ibn Umar! Is this how Allah Almighty commanded it to be done? You have gone against the Sunnah. The Sunnah is that when the state of purity begins, you give one divorce in each cycle (qur')." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded me, and I took her back. Then he said: "Then when she menstruates and then becomes pure, at that time divorce her or keep her with you." I said: "O Messenger of Allah! If I had given her three divorces, would I have had the right to take her back?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In that case she would have become separated from you, and it would have been an act of disobedience." (Allamah Haythami says:) I say: A hadith narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) is recorded in the Sahih, but without this context.
Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Ali bin Sa'id al-Razi. Daraqutni (may Allah have mercy on him) says: "He is not of that standing," while others have acknowledged his eminence. The remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).
