Sayyidah Safiyyah bint Huyayy (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out for Hajj, taking his wives with him. At one place on the way a man dismounted and began to lead the camels of these women, and he began to go fast. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Gently! You are leading glass vessels," meaning that he was leading women. While they were travelling along, the camel of Sayyidah Safiyyah bint Huyayy (may Allah be pleased with her) knelt down, even though her camel was the best of them all. She began to weep. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came, having been told about it, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began to wipe away her tears with his blessed hand, but her weeping increased. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was telling her to stop, and when her weeping became excessive, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) scolded her and ordered the people to make camp. The people made camp, although the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had not intended to make camp. Sayyidah Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The people made camp, and it was my allotted day. When the people had made camp, a tent was pitched for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went into it. Sayyidah Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) says: I could not understand how I would face the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); I feared that he might be angry with me. I went to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) and said to her: "You know that I would never give up my allotted day with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in exchange for anything at all, but I give my allotted day to you on the condition that you make the Messenger of Allah pleased with me." Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "Very well." Then Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) put on her head-covering, which had saffron on it; she sprinkled water on it so that its fragrance would begin to spread. Then she put on fine clothes and went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). She lifted the edge of the tent, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her: "What is the matter with you? Today is not your allotted day." She said: "This is the bounty of Allah Almighty; He grants it to whomever He wills." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) spent the midday rest with his wife. When it was time to set off, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Sayyidah Zaynab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her): "O Zaynab! Give a camel to your sister Safiyyah." That lady had the most mounts of them all. She said: "Shall I give it to your Jewish woman?" When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) heard this from her, he became angry, and he kept away from her and did not speak with her until he reached Makkah. During the days of the journey and the days of Mina he did not speak to her, until he returned to Madinah. Then Muharram passed and Safar passed, but he did not visit her, nor did he give her a share in the turns, until she lost hope of him. When the month of Rabi' al-Awwal came, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went to her. She saw his shadow and said: "This is the shadow of a man. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) does not come to me, so who could this be?" When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came in and she saw him, she said: "O Messenger of Allah! I do not know what to do now that you have come to me." She had a slave-girl whom she had kept aside, and she said: "That slave-girl is yours." Then he went to the bed of Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her), which had been lifted up; he laid it down with his blessed hand, then he was intimate with his wife and became pleased with her.
Ahmad recorded it. Its chain contains a female narrator named Sumayyah; Abu Dawud and others have recorded narrations from her, and no one has declared her da'if (weak). The rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).
