A'idhullah bin Abdullah Abu Idris al-Khawlani narrates: Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) arrived in Yemen. He met a woman from the tribe of Khawlan who had twelve of her sons with her. She had left their father at home. Even the youngest of those sons had grown a beard. The woman stood up and greeted Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him), standing between two of her sons, who were holding her by her arms on either side. The woman asked: O sir! Who sent you? Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) said to her: The Messenger of Allah sent me. The woman asked: The Messenger of Allah sent you, and you are the envoy of the Messenger of Allah? Will you not tell me, O envoy of the Messenger of Allah? Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) said to her: Ask me whatever you wish. The woman said: Tell me what right a man has over his wife. Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) said to her: She should fear Allah Almighty as much as she is able, and listen and obey. The woman said: I adjure you by Allah to tell me what right a man has over his wife. Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) said to her: Are you not content that you listen and obey and keep fearing Allah Almighty? The woman said: Yes, but tell me what right a man has over his wife, for I have left the father of these children at home, and he is a very old man. Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) said to the woman: By the One in whose hand is the soul of Mu'adh, if you went back to that man and found that leprosy had torn through his flesh and torn through his nostrils, and you found pus and blood flowing from his nostrils, and then you licked it with your mouth in order to reach his right, even then you would never reach his right (that is, you would not be able to fulfil his right).
Ahmad recorded it, and al-Tabarani recorded it, from the narration of Abd al-Hamid bin Bahram from Shahr. There is weakness in both of them, although both narrators have also been declared trustworthy.
