Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: When Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) was widowed by Khunays bin Hudhafah, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) met Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) and offered him Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) in marriage. Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I have no need of women, but I will consider it. Then he met Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and made him the offer, and he remained silent. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) felt aggrieved with Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). Then, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had proposed to Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her), Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) met Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I made the offer to Uthman and he gave me an answer; I made the offer to you and you remained silent. I was angrier with you than with Uthman, because he had at least given me an answer. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: It was a secret, and I did not like to disclose the secret. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say:
This narration is mentioned in the "Sahih" as a hadith from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) himself, while here it is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both).
Ahmad recorded it; its chain contains Sufyan bin Husayn, who is thiqah (trustworthy), though there is weakness in his narrations from al-Zuhri; the rest of its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
Abu Ya'la recorded something similar and added these words: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I complained about Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Hafsah will be married by one who is better than Uthman, and Uthman will be married to one who is better than Hafsah." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) married his daughter to Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him). Its chain contains al-Walid bin Muhammad al-Muwaqqari, who is da'if (weak).
