Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 7263

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: A man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: I am obliged to free a neck (that is, a male or female slave), and I have a black, non-Arab slave girl. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Bring her to me! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Do you testify that there is no god but Allah Almighty? She replied: Yes! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do you testify that I am the Messenger of Allah? She said: Yes! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said (to the man): Free her.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and al-Bazzar recorded it with two chains; the text of one of them is like this narration, and the text of the other has these words: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked the slave girl: Where is Allah Almighty? She pointed with her hand towards the sky. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Who am I? She said: You are the Messenger of Allah." Its chain contains a narrator, Sa'id bin Abi al-Marzuban, who is da'if (weak) and a mudallis, and he narrated it with 'an'anah; its chain also contains a narrator, Muhammad bin Abi Layla, who had a poor memory, though he has been declared trustworthy.
