Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: When Sayyiduna Ghaylan bin Salamah al-Thaqafi (may Allah be pleased with him) accepted Islam, he had ten wives. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: Choose four of them. During the caliphate of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), he divorced those (four) wives as well and divided his wealth among his sons. When news of this reached Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: I think that the Shaytan, from what he overhears by stealth, heard of your death and cast it into your heart, and perhaps you will now live only a short while. By Allah, either you will take back your wives, or you will take back your wealth, or I will make them heirs and then give orders concerning your grave, and it will be stoned just as the grave of Abu Righal was stoned. (Allamah Haythami says:) I say: Al-Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah recorded this narration up to the words: "Choose four of them."
Ahmad, al-Bazzar and Abu Ya'la recorded it, and the narrators of Ahmad are the narrators of the Sahih.
