Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 6953

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came upon two men who were joined to each other and were walking on foot towards the House (the Ka'bah). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What is the matter with this rope?" They both said: "O Messenger of Allah! We vowed that we would walk on foot to the House tied together with a rope in this way." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is not a vow." He had their rope cut and said: "A vow is only that by which the pleasure of Allah Almighty is sought." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Imam Abu Dawud recorded the last part of this narration.
Imam Ahmad recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Abd al-Rahman bin Abi al-Zinad, whom a group declared thiqah (trustworthy) while others declared him da'if (weak).
