Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 6770

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) states: A man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! My father has taken my wealth. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Go and bring your father to me. Sayyiduna Jibril came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: Allah Almighty sends you greetings of peace and says to you: When that old man comes to you, ask him about something he said within himself, which his ears did not hear. When the old man came, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: What is the matter with your son that he is complaining about you? Do you want to take his wealth? The man said: O Messenger of Allah! Ask him; I spend that wealth either on one of his paternal aunts, or on his maternal aunt, or on myself. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Leave this matter aside; tell me about the thing that you said only within yourself, which even your ears did not hear. The old man said: By Allah, O Messenger of Allah! Allah Almighty keeps increasing our certainty through you. I said something within myself which even my ears did not hear. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Recite it! I am listening. He said: I said (that is, I composed these verses): "I fed you when you were newborn and cared for you until you grew up; you drank again and again of what I earned for you. Whenever a night brought you illness, I spent that night sleepless and restless because of your illness, as if what struck you had struck me instead of you, so my eyes would overflow with tears. I used to fear for you lest you perish, even though I knew that death has a fixed, appointed time. Then, when you reached the age and the limit that I had longed for, you repaid me with harshness and rudeness, as if you were the one bestowing favours and kindness. Since you did not observe the right of my fatherhood, if only you had at least treated me as one neighbour treats another. You will see him (that is, my son) always ready to oppose, as if he had been appointed an advocate against those who are in the right." The narrator states: At that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) seized his son by the collar and said: "You and your wealth belong to your father." (Allamah Haythami says:) I say: Imam Ibn Majah recorded a part of this narration.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Saghir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains someone whom I do not know. The narrator al-Munkadir bin Muhammad is da'if (weak), though Imam Ahmad declared him thiqah (trustworthy), and in this complete form the narration is munkar (rejected). It has already preceded as an abridged narration through another chain, whose narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
