Sayyiduna Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade the owner of date palms from taking a debt against the fruit of his date palms until their fruit becomes fit to be eaten, because there is the fear that he will take on a large debt and then, if his fruit is spoiled, he will be unable to repay it. He also forbade the owner of a field from taking a debt against his field until it becomes ready to be harvested. And he forbade the owner of gold, when he sells that gold in exchange for fruit, from selling the fruit in exchange for gold until he has measured the grain and taken possession of it, because there is the fear of usury (riba).
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and al-Bazzar recorded it in abridged form; its chain contains a narrator Marwan bin Ja'far al-Samuri, whom Ibn Abi Hatim declared trustworthy, while al-Azdi says: The hadith scholars have criticised him.
