Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) reports this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Do not sell fruit until its ripeness becomes apparent." It was asked: What is meant by its ripeness becoming apparent? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: That it becomes safe from blight and ripens fully.
Al-Bazzar recorded it, and al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, except that he recorded these words: "Do not sell dates until their ripeness becomes apparent." Al-Bazzar's chain contains a narrator Atiyyah, who is da'if (weak), though he has also been declared trustworthy; and al-Tabarani's chain contains a narrator Jabir al-Ju'fi, who is also da'if (weak), though he has also been declared trustworthy.
