Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A young man of the Ansar had recently married. He set out with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to take part in a military expedition. He came back from the way to check on his wife, and there was his wife standing at the door of the house. He pointed his spear at her, and the woman said: Come inside and see what the situation in the house is. He went in, and there was a snake lying on his bed. The man skewered the snake on his spear and then planted the spear in the neighbourhood. The snake attacked and the man also attacked, and the snake died and the man died too. This was mentioned to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: Some Muslim jinn had come to Madinah. (The narrator is unsure; perhaps the words are:) He said: There are some dwellers in these houses; when you see any of them, seek refuge from it, and if it comes back, kill it."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
