Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 605

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Be sincere to one another regarding knowledge, for one of you being dishonest in his knowledge is more grievous than his being dishonest in his wealth. Indeed, Allah Almighty will call you to account on the Day of Resurrection."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded this narration in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Abu Sa'd al-Baqqal. Imam Abu Zur'ah says: He is weak in hadith and a mudallis (one who conceals defects in the chain). He was asked: "Is he saduq (truthful)?" He replied: "Yes! He does not lie." Abu Hisham al-Rifa'i narrates: Abu Usamah narrated this hadith to us; he says: Abu Sa'd al-Baqqal narrated this hadith to us, and he was a thiqah (trustworthy) narrator. Shu'bah, because of this narrator's tadlis, and Imam al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) and Yahya bin Ma'in declared him da'if (weak). The remaining narrators of this narration have been declared trustworthy.
