It is narrated about Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) that he was sitting by the pulpit of Marwan bin al-Hakam in Makkah while Marwan was delivering a sermon to the people. Marwan mentioned Makkah and its virtue, but he did not mention Madinah. Sayyiduna Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) was troubled by this. He was an aged man. He stood up and said: "Where is this speaker? I see that you have described the virtues of Makkah at great length and mentioned its excellence, yet the virtues of it that you have not mentioned are even more, and you have not mentioned Madinah at all. I bear witness that I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Madinah is better than Makkah.'"
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains Muhammad bin Abd al-Rahman bin Raddad, whose weakness is agreed upon.
