Sayyiduna Ma'mar bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: During the Farewell Pilgrimage I used to saddle the mount of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). One night he said to me: "O Ma'mar! Last night I felt some unsteadiness in my saddle." I said: "By the One who sent you with the truth, I fastened it just as I used to fasten it before; but perhaps it was loosened by someone who wants to take this service in my place, so that you would hand it over to someone else instead of me." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I am not going to do that." The narrator says: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had sacrificed his animal at Mina, he instructed me to shave his head. The narrator says: I took the razor and stood by his head. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) looked at my face and said to me: "O Ma'mar! The Messenger of Allah has put the lobe of his ear in your control, and there is a razor in your hand." I said: "By Allah, O Messenger of Allah! This is a blessing and a favour of His upon me." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Very well, then I will keep you on." The narrator says: Then I shaved the head of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Imam Ahmad and Imam al-Tabarani recorded it, the latter in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains Abd al-Rahman bin Uqbah, the freed slave of Ma'mar, whom Ibn Abi Hatim mentioned without declaring him trustworthy or criticising him. The remaining narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).
