Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No days are more excellent in the sight of Allah Almighty than the days of the first ten of Dhu al-Hijjah." The narrator says: A man said: "O Messenger of Allah, are these (days) more excellent, or is jihad in the path of Allah for the same number of days more excellent?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "These days are more excellent than jihad in the path of Allah for the same number of days, except for the one whose face becomes covered in dust in the earth (that is, the one who is martyred). And no day is more excellent in the sight of Allah Almighty than the day of Arafah. Allah Almighty descends to the lowest heaven and boasts before the inhabitants of the heaven about the inhabitants of the earth, and says: 'Look at My servants, dishevelled and covered in dust, reciting the Talbiyah aloud; they have come from every distant region, though they have not seen My mercy and they have not seen My punishment.' (The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) says:) I have not seen any day on which more people are freed from Hell than the day of Arafah."
Abu Ya'la recorded it; its chain contains Muhammad bin Marwan al-Uqayli, whom Yahya bin Ma'in and Ibn Hibban declared thiqah (trustworthy), though there is some criticism of him. The rest of its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
Al-Bazzar recorded it, except that he recorded these words: "The most excellent of days are the ten days." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Some hadiths regarding the excellence of the first ten of Dhu al-Hijjah will come later in the chapter on sacrifice, if Allah wills.
