Muhammad bin Abdullah al-Thaqafi narrates: During the Hajj season I was present at the sermon of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both). The narrator says: Before we knew it, he came out to us one day before the Day of Tarwiyah. He was in the state of ihram, and he was a handsome man of middle age. When he came, the people said: "O Commander of the Faithful!" He ascended the pulpit, wearing two white garments. He greeted the people with salam, and they returned his greeting. Then he recited the talbiyah, and it was the most beautiful talbiyah I have ever heard. After that he praised and glorified Allah Almighty, and then said: "Amma ba'd: You have come from distant lands as delegations to the court of Allah Almighty, and it is a duty upon Allah Almighty to honour His guests. Whoever has come seeking what is with Allah Almighty, then one who asks of Allah Almighty is never disappointed. Confirm your words with your deeds, for the essence of speech is action. Mind your intention, mind your intention, mind your hearts. Fear Allah, fear Allah regarding these days of yours, for these are days in which sins are forgiven. You have come from various lands, and you have not come here for any trade, nor to acquire wealth, nor to gain worldly things." Then he recited the talbiyah and the people recited it too. Then he spoke at length. Then he said: "Amma ba'd: Indeed, Allah Almighty has said in His Book: 'The Hajj is in well-known months.' These are three months: Shawwal, Dhu al-Qa'dah and ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah. Whoever makes Hajj obligatory upon himself in them, then let there be no rafath (that is, no intercourse), no fusuq (that is, no abuse) and no jidal (that is, no quarrelling). Whatever good you do, Allah knows it. And take provision, for indeed the best provision is piety. Allah Almighty has also said: 'There is no sin upon you in seeking the bounty of Allah Almighty'; so Allah Almighty made trade lawful for them." Then he recited this verse: "When you depart from Arafat" — this is the place of standing, where people remain until the sun sets, then they depart from there — "then remember Allah Almighty at al-Mash'ar al-Haram." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: This refers to the mountains near Muzdalifah at which people stand. "And remember Him as He has guided you." He said: This day is not that; this was for the people of the city, who used to depart from Muzdalifah while the rest of the people departed from Arafat. Allah Almighty did not let this continue for them and revealed this verse: "Then depart from where the people depart", up to: "your rites". When people finished their Hajj, they used to boast about their forefathers, so Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "Remember Allah Almighty as you remember your forefathers, or with even greater remembrance. Among the people are some who say: 'Our Lord, give us in this world', and such a person will have no share in the Hereafter. And among them is one who says: 'Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and save us from the punishment of the Fire.'" Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Those people work in this world for their Hereafter. The narrator says: Then he recited until he reached this verse: "Remember Allah Almighty during the appointed days." He said: This refers to the Days of Tashriq, and the remembrance of Allah Almighty in those days is in the form of tasbih, saying Alhamdulillah, saying La ilaha illallah, saying Allahu akbar, and tamjid. The narrator says: After that he mentioned the people's miqats and said: "The miqat for the people of Madinah is Dhu al-Hulayfah; the miqat for the people of Iraq is al-Aqiq; the miqat for the people of Najd and the people of Ta'if is Qarn; and for the people of Yemen it is Yalamlam." The narrator says: Then he supplicated against the disbelievers among the People of the Book, saying: "O Allah, send punishment upon the disbelievers among the People of the Book who deny Your signs, reject Your messengers and turn people away from Your path. O Allah, punish them, and make their hearts like the hearts of immoral women." He supplicated at length about this. Then he said: "There are some people here whose hearts Allah Almighty has blinded just as He has taken away their sight. They issue fatwas about Hajj al-Tamattu', that a person comes from Khurasan in ihram for Hajj, and when he reaches Makkah these people say: 'Turn your Hajj into Umrah and come out of ihram, then enter ihram for Hajj from here.' By Allah, the ruling of Tamattu' was only for one who had been prevented (muhsar)." Then he recited the talbiyah and the people recited it too. The narrator says: I have never seen more people weeping than on that day.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Its chain contains Sa'id bin al-Marzuban, who has been declared reliable, though there has been much criticism of him; its chain also contains other narrators besides him whom I do not know.
