Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 503

Sayyiduna Sakhbarah (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: Two men passed by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was seated and was giving admonition. He said: "Sit down, both of you! You are upon goodness." When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and his Companions dispersed from him, those two men also stood and said: "O Messenger of Allah! You said to us: 'Sit down, both of you! You are upon goodness.' Is this specific to us, or is it general for all people?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no servant who seeks knowledge except that it (seeking knowledge) becomes an expiation for his past (sins)." (Allamah Haythami says:) I say: Imam Tirmidhi recorded only these words from it: "Whoever seeks knowledge, it becomes an expiation for his past (sins)."
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Abu Dawud the blind, and he is kadhdhab (a liar).
