Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Hail fell from the sky, and Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) said to us, while we were boys at the time: "O Anas bin Malik, hand me some hailstones." I handed them to him and he began eating them. I said to him: "Are you not fasting?" He said: "Yes, I am. This is neither food nor drink; it is a blessing from the sky by which we purify our stomachs." Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him about this, and he said: "Take it from your uncle."
Abu Ya'la and al-Bazzar recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Ali bin Zayd; he has been criticised, though he has also been declared trustworthy. Its remaining narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
Al-Bazzar recorded it as a mawquf narration (stopping at the Companion) and added these words: "I mentioned this to Sa'id bin al-Musayyib, and he disliked it and said that it quenches thirst."
