Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: After offering the Fajr prayer, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned towards his Companions and asked: Has anyone among you begun this day fasting? Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah, I had not intended to fast, so I am not fasting today. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: But I did intend to fast, so I am fasting. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Has anyone among you visited a sick person today? Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We have only just offered the (Fajr) prayer and have done nothing else yet, so how could we visit the sick? Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I was informed that my brother Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) was ill, so on my way to the mosque I passed by him to see how he was. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Has anyone among you fed a needy person? Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah, we have only just offered the (Fajr) prayer and have done nothing else. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When I entered the mosque, there was a beggar asking. I found a piece of bread in the hand of Abd al-Rahman, so I took it from him and gave it to the needy man. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Receive the glad tidings of Paradise. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) sighed deeply and said: How wonderful is Paradise! Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said a word by which he consoled Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), saying: May Allah Almighty have mercy on Umar, may Allah Almighty have mercy on Umar; whenever he intends some good, Abu Bakr gets to that good before him. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Abu Dawud recorded part of this narration.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Its chain contains Mubarak bin Fadalah, who is thiqah (trustworthy), though he has been criticised.
