Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Seeking knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain mentions that Uthman bin Abd al-Rahman al-Qurashi narrated it from Hammad bin Abi Sulayman. About this narrator Uthman, Imam Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) said: He is majhul (unknown). And Imam Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) does not accept narrations reported from Hammad, except for those narrated from him by the early ones, such as Shu'bah, Sufyan al-Thawri and al-Dastuwa'i; others besides them narrated from him after his mental deterioration (ikhtilat).
