The narrator Uthman relates: It was the practice of Sayyiduna Harithah (may Allah be pleased with him), whose eyesight had gone, that he had fixed a cord from his place of prayer to the door of his room, and had placed beside it a basket containing dates and other things. When a poor person came and greeted him, he would take something from that container, then hold the end of the cord and hand the thing to the poor person. His family used to say: We will do this task for you. He would say: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Handing something to a poor person protects from an evil death."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Its chain contains a narrator whom I do not know.
