Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Were it not that the poor tell lies, the one who turns them away would not succeed." In one narration the words are: "If the poor were truthful, the one who turns them away would not succeed."
Al-Tabarani recorded all these narrations in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; their chain contains a narrator, Ja'far bin al-Zubayr, and he is da'if (weak).
