Ata bin al-Sa'ib narrates: Sayyidah Umm Kulthum bint Ali (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated this to me. Ata says: I brought her something of charity, and that lady said: We urge our young people to avoid it, because the freed slave of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), Sayyiduna Maymun (may Allah be pleased with him) (the narrator is unsure; perhaps the words are:) Sayyiduna Mihran (may Allah be pleased with him), told me that he passed by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "O Maymun! (the narrator is unsure; perhaps the words are:) O Mihran! We are a household that has been forbidden from using charity, and our freed slaves are also part of us, so do not eat charity."
Ahmad and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir recorded it. In one narration of al-Tabarani the words are: A freed slave of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) narrated this to me, whose name was Sayyiduna Tahman (may Allah be pleased with him) (the narrator is unsure; perhaps the words are:) Sayyiduna Dhakwan (may Allah be pleased with him). In another narration he recorded these words: His name was Sayyiduna Kaysan (may Allah be pleased with him) or Sayyiduna Hurmuz (may Allah be pleased with him). Regarding the lady Sayyidah Umm Kulthum (may Allah be pleased with her), I have not seen anyone other than Ata bin al-Sa'ib who narrated from her, and there has been criticism of Ata.
