Ata' bin al-Sa'ib narrates from his father, from his grandfather: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by a well in which lay the body of a black man. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) looked down into the well and saw that man in it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What is the reason? Why is he lying in the well?" The people said: "O Messenger of Allah! This man was detached from the religion; sometimes he would pray and sometimes he would not." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Woe to you! Take him out." By the order of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that man was washed and shrouded. He said: "Carry his body." He said: "The angels are going ahead of us." The narrator says: He offered his funeral prayer.
Imam Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. There is criticism about the narrator Ata', and the person narrating from him is also not known.
