Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he was distressed. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Why is it that I see you distressed?" He said: "O Messenger of Allah! Last night I was with a cousin of mine, so-and-so, and his soul was being taken." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Did you prompt him then to say 'La ilaha illallah'?" He said: "O Messenger of Allah! I did so." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Did he say that word?" He said: "Yes." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Paradise has become due for him." Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah! How is it for the living?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It demolishes their sins all the more; it demolishes their sins all the more."
Abu Ya'la and al-Bazzar recorded it. Its chain contains Za'idah bin Abi al-Ruqad; al-Qawariri declared him thiqah (trustworthy), while al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) and others declared him da'if (weak).
