Sayyiduna Samurah bin Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The example of the one who flees from death is like the fox whom the earth pursues for a debt. It keeps running until, when it is exhausted and out of breath, it enters its burrow. The earth says to it: 'O fox! My debt?' It comes out and runs fast, and it keeps on (running) like this until its neck breaks and it dies."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains Mu'adh bin Muhammad al-Hudhali; al-Uqayli says: He is not corroborated in narrating this hadith as marfu' (attributed to the Prophet).
