Humayd bin Abd al-Rahman al-Himyari narrates: A man named Sayyiduna Humamah (may Allah be pleased with him) was a Companion of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). During the caliphate of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), he went out to Isfahan to take part in battle, and Isfahan was conquered. He supplicated: "O Allah, Humamah claims that he loves meeting You. If he is truthful, then make his truthfulness binding upon him; and if he is lying, then make it binding upon him even though he dislikes it." Then a disease of the belly seized him, and he passed away in Isfahan. Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O people, by Allah, according to what we have heard from the tongue of your Prophet and according to our knowledge, Humamah is a martyr."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Kabir, and Ahmad recorded something similar. Its chain contains a narrator, Dawud al-Awdi; according to one report Yahya bin Ma'in declared him thiqah (trustworthy), and according to another report he declared him da'if (weak).
