Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with zakah three times. He said: "Whom do you count as a martyr among you?" The people said: "The one who is killed in the path of Allah." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In that case the martyrs of my Ummah would be few. Being killed in the path of Allah is martyrdom, plague is martyrdom, a woman dying during the postpartum period is martyrdom, burning is martyrdom, drowning is martyrdom, tuberculosis is martyrdom, and (dying of a disease of) the belly is martyrdom."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Kabir. Its chain contains a narrator, Mandal bin Ali, about whom there is much criticism, and he has also been declared trustworthy.
(Allamah Haythami says:) I say: Other hadiths similar to this will come later in the chapter on jihad, if Allah wills.
