Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 351

Ayyub bin Udayy bin Udayy narrates from his father, or perhaps his paternal uncle: There was a slave whose name was Kaysan. He named himself Qays, claimed to be the offspring of his master, and went off to Kufah. His father rode to Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "O Commander of the Believers! My son, who was born in my house, now claims descent from someone else. He has turned away from me and has attributed himself to my master and his master (that is, he presents himself as the son of my master)." So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him): "Do you not know that we used to recite this verse: 'Do not turn away from your forefathers, for that would be disbelief on your part'?" Sayyiduna Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "Yes, indeed!" Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to that man: "Go and tie your son to your camel, then set off; strike your camel once with the whip and strike your son once with the whip, until you bring him back to your family."
Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; and I have not seen anyone who mentions Ayyub bin Udayy, his father or his uncle.
