Al-Hasan al-Basri states: A man came to Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "Shall I not kill Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) for you?" Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "No! How could you kill him when an army is with him?" He said: "I will go and join him, and then I will attack him treacherously." Sayyiduna al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "No! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Faith is a shackle against treacherous attack; a believer does not attack treacherously.'"
Imam Ahmad recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Mubarak bin Fadalah, who is thiqah (trustworthy) but commits tadlis (concealment in narration); however, in this narration he said: "Al-Hasan al-Basri narrated this to us."
