Imam Abu Ja'far Muhammad bin Ali (that is, Imam al-Baqir) said: We said to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him): "Narrate to us a hadith that you heard from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) yourself and in which you saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) yourself, and do not narrate to us from anyone other than yourself, even if that other person is thiqah (trustworthy)." (The narrator said:) So he mentioned the whole hadith, in which, further on, are these words: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite Surah al-Kafirun and Surah al-Ikhlas in the two rak'ahs before Fajr and in the two rak'ahs (sunnah) after Maghrib."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat as part of a long hadith that will come later in the chapter on virtues (manaqib), if Allah wills. Its chain contains a narrator, Asram bin Hawshab, who is matruk (abandoned).
